Since March 2017, I’ve been serving at Northside HERO Central children’s ministry. Children are our greatest asset and have a value that is immeasurable. We can see things differently through the eyes of a child. They are raw and real. I’ve enjoyed growing and “relearning” with the children at HERO. Encouraging kids to know and follow Jesus has given me an opportunity to see my own faith from a fresh perspective.
It is my deepest desire to know ME through the eyes of Christ, and through serving I’m learning that patience with a child teaches me patience with myself too. God sometimes shows us our greatest area of growth when serving.
When I began to serve, I experienced a few challenges in other areas of my life that made it less than convenient: our car was stolen, and it was challenging to make commitments that would not “fit into our schedules.” But I remained obedient to the call to serve, and God continued to show me that he’s the one in charge of my life and that he will place us where he wants and when, no matter what it takes. He is the greatest orchestrator of our lives.
I have often felt that the best way to come to know a church is through serving children and their families alongside others within the church community. The volunteer family at epikos is precious. We get about one hour per week to serve children by leading them to Christ with the truth and provide parents a safe place to bring their children allowing them to enjoy service. It’s very fulfilling.
I began serving at epikos because of the need and call to serve. My faith is always growing, and sometimes I do not feel qualified or worthy to serve. But I am learning that I will never really have what it takes to do anything. It all comes from the Lord. I am just to be yielded to Him to serve through me. It was like the Lord was saying “this is where I want you to be in my heart which is where the children are.”
But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19:14
