Lead Pastor Transition Update: Establishing the search process of our next Lead Pastor

Greetings, epikos.

As most of you are aware, two months ago, our Founder and Lead Pastor, Danny Parmelee, and his family were launched by epikos to plant churches throughout mid-America, with their new home being in Nashville. If this comes as news to you, or you think you missed an update along the way, here are the links to bring you up to speed (Announcement of Pastor Danny’s Transition, March Update, April Update.). So, yes, epikos Church has been without a Lead Pastor for two months, and we’re ready to take our next steps!

Two things remain important about the process…

First. epikos, you have a voice! In February, the Covenant Members and Small Group Leaders were invited to a gathering that highlighted the mission and vision of epikos and shed light on the potential of our trajectory. Then, in March, we launched an online survey so you could share how you felt about epikos and what you desired in our next Lead Pastor. Almost 400 people responded and shared their thoughts and insights! The results were encouraging, informative, and challenging. To read about the highlights from the analysis of that survey, please click here.

Second. Priority will be given to any internal candidates who desire consideration for the Lead Pastor role. Through researching best practices of churches who’ve journeyed this path, and, after much prayer and discussion, the Overseers unanimously concluded that the wisest way to move forward is to conduct a nationwide search that includes any interested candidates from the epikos staff. This process will provide the most clarity, the most confidence, and the most unity as we seek who God wants to lead his work through epikos Church. The Campus Pastors and Overseers want you to know that they are aligned on this plan and are confident in these next steps. Above all else, their prayers have been for wisdom, clarity, and unity.

Lead Pastor Profile

As a part of this update, below are some beginning thoughts of a Lead Pastor job description. This profile has been influenced by epikos core values, the survey results mentioned above, and Overseer and staff discussions:

The new Lead Pastor of epikos Church will be someone gifted in leadership on a large scale and responsible for leading our entire congregation to live out our mission as a church. This individual will lead strategy and vision with the Overseers and will oversee operational leadership with the Executive Pastor and Campus Pastors, all while loving the church, orienting us around God’s Word, and diligently seeking to advance the disciple-making mission of Jesus through everything we do.

In addition to the core areas above, we also desire that our new Lead Pastor will embrace and implement the following critical elements that are needed at epikos Church as we prepare for the new season ahead.

  • Preach and teach messages drawn from exposition of the Bible.
  • Lead and participate in a Team Teaching environment.
  • Embrace an authentic, vulnerable, and diverse culture.
  • Be passionate about non-believers experiencing the gospel.
  • Invest in a leadership pipeline of future campus pastors and leaders.
  • Be an excellent systematic and strategic leader.

So what’s next?

In order to launch the search in the strongest way possible, we researched and interviewed various groups that could assist with the initial stages of vetting candidates and have chosen to partner with Vanderbloemen Search Group. As a premier search partner for church staffing, Vanderbloemen Search Group will provide effective and efficient experience to fill this type of high-profile role within a reasonable period of time. We will share more details on the candidates and interview process as we get closer to that stage of the search.

How can you support epikos right now?

Pray. Pray specifically for the one that God has already chosen to lead us next. Pray for them. Pray for their family. Pray for their current ministry. Pray for the ways God will work in and through them over the coming months. Pray that we, as epikos, exhibit the boldness, humility, love, and grace that are only available from the Father. And finally, we ask you to pray for unity as we journey this path together.

As always, if you have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@epikos.org.
